Technical assessment
The technical assessment process is aimed at collecting information about each exiting application, in order to understand which ones can be considered compatible each other and size the resources required.
It is also important to understand the level of stability for each server, and the expected - or required - availability of each application/server.
This phase of the process is also useful to identify the major issues that might limit consolidation. For example:
- servers distributed on geographically separated sites, with slow network links
- servers placed in a particular environment for security reasons
- servers providing security or mission critical applications
- applications with special requirements, such as OS version, external peripherals or dedicated hardware
- commercial agreements with the suppliers for a specific application/server
